Domestic Violence Prevention
The tensions caused by the cultural gap, high
unemployment, failure to adjust to Israeli society,
and frustration of men of their wives’ more rapid
adjustment to Israel has resulted in greater levels of
domestic violence, too many of which have ended
tragically. For this violence to stop, a community sensitive approach must be made, with the full
involvement of community leaders both young and
old, including the traditional kessim and shmagale.
ENP launched a program that comprehensively
addresses this disturbing issue. It provides a social
worker, trains and utilizes traditional mediators,
creates men’s groups whose graduates then serve
as initiators of change among their peers. City wide round tables and prevention activities are
also included in this critical initiative.
Opportunities for Assistance: Preventing Domestic Violence
With a concerted, targeted response, the Ethiopian community in Israel can prevent this
disturbing trend that had never been witnessed while they were in Ethiopia.
• $22,000 will launch a series of city wide programs aimed at domestic violence prevention.
• $53,000 will fund one social worker.
• $150,000 will support this critical program in one city for two years.
