Swedish Delegation at SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program in Carmiel

November 10, 2014
Nothing illustrates the challenges faced - and ENP’s solutions being put into action - better than a first-hand visit to an ENP Program. ENP was very excited to host a delegation from Sweden at our SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program in Carmiel – hosting the 30-strong group at the Amit High School in the city to hear Rachamim Melako - ENP supervisor for Carmiel and six other northern cities - briefly talk about his history and the state of Ethiopian-Israelis today.

Local spiritual leader Qes Ephrayim, also spoke to the group, breathing life into the abstract and talking about the incredible potential that he sees in Ethiopian-Israeli youth supported by ENP. When Ephrayim’s father died, he took his place in a long line as one of only a few dozen “qussotch” in the world – Ethiopian Jews who trace their ancestry more than 2000 years to the ancient Jewish priesthood as “kohanim.” He’s a community pillar and leader – and his recognition of the power of ENP Programs is indicative of the grassroots nature of ENP: Our work - on all levels - is done with the full involvement and participation of the Ethiopian-Israeli community itself.

A proud father with a daughter currently in ENP SPACE also talked to the group - about how important ENP has been in helping his children – one of whom has now finished the Program and is on track to study medicine in university. Two current students of SPACE also spoke about their experiences: One student described her aspiration to be an artist while the second wants to represent her country as Miss Israel! ENP is there to support their dreams – and provide them with the scholastic, psycho-social, and community support that will help each and every student in their full and successful integration into Israeli society.

Thank you Sweden for your visit and show of support! And a special thanks to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh for their support of ENP SPACE in Carmiel.
