The Challenge

A northern city with a veteran Ethiopian Israeli population that requires extra help.

Located in the Northern District of Israel, Afula is nicknamed the “Capital of the Jezreel Valley”. The city is well known for its great falafel, which attracts both travelers and locals.

Afula has approximately 54,250 residents, 3,900 of whom are of Ethiopian heritage (CBS, 2021).

Ethiopian-Israeli communities face several socio-economic challenges. Listed below are some of the most prominent issues for Ethiopian-Israeli children and teenagers:

•One-third of the households with children are managed by a single parent. Single-parents often do not have time to assist their children with schoolwork. Children are left without any support system at home, which severely hinders their academic performance.

•Domestic violence rates are disproportionately high within the Ethiopian-Israeli community. Many cases of domestic violence can be attributed to social or linguistic misunderstandings between parents and children.

•The unemployment rate of Ethiopian-Israelis ages of 18-64 is dramatically higher than the national average: 52% for men, and 68% for women.

ENP's Response

Making a difference by strengthening academic achievement and providing social and cultural support in the ENP Scholastic Assistance Program and Youth Outreach Centers

The ENP Scholastic Assistance Program (SPACE) is one of ENP's many successes. This program improves students’ scholastic aptitudes, and works to increase the number of students that take the bagrut (matriculation) exams through small tutoring workshops. ENP Youth Coordinators offer social and emotional support to Ethiopian-Israeli students in attempts to:

 •reduce high school drop-out rates

•strengthen students’ motivations to study, and increase self-confidence

•foster a sense of community by organizing cultural and social activities for participants

The ENP Scholastic Assistance program has achieved some remarkable results in Afula!

•ENP Scholastic Assistance already has 213 children enrolled, and this figure is growing every year!

 •ENP largely stopped the academic displacement of students to lower performing high schools, which do not offer matriculation tracks. In 2011-2012 only 9% of students starting 10th grade  were transferred to lower performing schools, compared to the 24% in 2007-2008;

•The number of students that have received matriculation certificates (which meet university admissions requirements) has risen dramatically from 18% in 2008 to 40% in 2010.

Opened in 2010 ENP had two Youth Outreach Center in Afula. These centers provided many extracurricular activities, classes, and workshops. ENP was overjoyed to report the success of these centers. In 2017 ENP Youth Outreach Centers were handed off to the Israeli government for future operations. ENP continues it's work in Afula to help the community.

•During the years that the Afula Youth Centers were operating hundreds of Ethiopian-Israeli students participated in various activities and workshops.

•ENP's Afula Youth Outreach Center organized many successful after-school classes, such as: hip-hop, make-up, hairstyling, soccer, graffiti, photography lessons, and leadership training seminars.

Did you know that…

ENP Scholastic Assistance participants achieved a composite score of 68% on their bagrut exams?! This mean was approximately eight points higher than Afula's citywide average (only 60%)!
