The Challenge

Hadera is the city that lies between Tel Aviv and Haifa on the west coast. This city is proud of its symphonic string orchestra and is well known for having one of the oldest wind orchestras of Israel.

The city has 88,783 inhabitants. 5,798 citizens are Ethiopian-Israeli, 1044, or 18%, of whom are school aged children.

Poverty, a lower socio-economic environment, and lack of support among the young Ethiopian-Israeli community

Like in many places in Israel, the majority of the Ethiopian-Israeli community in Hadera faces many challenges:
• Many of them live in economic hardship: this community’s economic and social deprivation, combined with the crisis of cultural transition, has a hugely negative impact on every aspect of their children’s’ lives;
• A vicious cycle has been created in which underachievement reduces their chances of improving their socio-economic status and in turn, condemns future generations of children to a life of poverty.

ENP's Response

Better grades, higher motivation and greater future prospects among Ethiopian-Israeli students due to ENP’s SPACE Program

ENP launched the SPACE Program in this city, in which a total of 200 students will participating in the 2016-2017 school year.

As in the national trends, specifically in Hadera, continued achievement is evident:
• There has been a significant improvement in numbers of children maintaining or improving their grades in junior high school:
o 84% of 8th and 9th graders maintained or improved their grades in mathematics
o 62% of 8th and 9th graders maintained or improved their grades in English
o 95% of 8th and 9th graders maintained or improved their grades in history
• In the Winter (January 2012) matriculation exams 100% of students who took the highest-level exam in mathematics and English passed the exams.
• 66% of students are anticipated to successfully pass their matriculation exams in 2012, representing a continued increase, as in the previous recorded trends, as previously reported:
o The percentage of 12th grade students qualifying for a matriculation certificate has risen by 50% over the past four years:
o In 2009-2010, 65% of 12th grade scholastic assistance students in Hadera achieved a full matriculation certificate in contrast to only 43% of the 12th graders in 2006-2007.
o The percentage of 12th grade students qualifying for university entrance has risen by 71% over the past four years: Among the 2009-2010 12th grade students who achieved a full matriculation certificate, 41% achieved high enough grades to qualify for university entrance, in contrast to only 24% of the 12th graders in 2006-2007.
