ENP's Response

Educational and Cultural Activities: Meeting the Needs of Ethiopian-Israeli Teenagers

In general, Ethiopian kids spend less time on extracurricular activities that could potentially enrich and empower them. In addition, they have a higher chance of dropping out of school. ENP launched the Scholastic Assistance Program in Pardes Hanna in an attempt to combat these issues. The program provides supplementary hours of educational support to 47 students in Grades 7-12 in order to strengthen their academic achievements. Support is provided to small groups of students (4 to 6 students per group), allowing for the development of highly effective personalized study plans with a great emphasis on personal development, such as building self-esteem, study skills, and self-motivation.

The program in Pardes Hanna-Karkur:

  • Offers a range of enriching extra-curricular, cultural, and social opportunities. These stimulating and creative activities help build a sense of community among the students, increase the students' motivation to participate in the program, and help cultivate excellent relations with the staff.
  • Reached an extremely high score of attendance and participation in 2011: in the Dror School, 89%of the students have an attendance rate of at least 80%; in the Elisheva School, the attendance rate is above 90% for ten of the twelve study groups, and the remaining two groups have an attendance rate of 65%.
  • In 2008-9, 10 of 16 graduates (62%) were eligible for matriculation certificates.
