The Challenge

Poverty and Youth At Risk in the Sixth Largest City in Israel

Petach Tikva is a city in the Center District of Israel east of Tel Aviv. It is the second most important industrial city in Israel.

Israel's sixth largest city, Petach Tikva has a population of 248,000 (CBS, 2020), of whom 8,100 are Ethiopian-Israelis.

Unfortunately, poverty is a problem among the local Ethiopian-Israeli community. There are many interrelated factors that cause Petach Tikva's Ethiopian-Israeli youth to be more at risk:

  • Families are large, with an average of six children per family
  • Many of the parents are unemployed or have low salaries
  • The majority of Ethiopian-Israeli families live in low-income neighborhoods where conditions are far from ideal.

ENP's Response

Meeting Social, Educational, and Cultural Needs and a Supportive Place for Ethiopian-Israelis in Petach Tikva

In order to meet the challenges in Petach Tikva and to provide Ethiopian-Israeli teenagers and future generations with a better future, ENP implemented the Scholastic Assistance Program in the city. This holistic program provides supplementary hours of educational support to improve students’ achievements in core subjects, increases their motivation to learn, and improves their self-confidence.

The goals of the Scholastic Assistance Program in Petach Tikva are:

  • Increase the number of students matriculating and improve their level of achievement.
  • Improve academic achievement in the years leading up to matriculation.
  • Reduce the numbers dropping out of normative, educational frameworks, as well as the extent of hidden dropouts.
  • Strengthen students’ motivation to study as well as their self-confidence in their abilities

In addition to the Scholastic Assistance Center, ENP also has a Youth Outreach Center, which functions as a second home for many teenagers. The center tries to encourage personal growth, helping the participants to develop higher aspirations for the future, greater self-confidence, and improved interpersonal skills. In addition, the goal is to reduce risk behaviors and delinquency. This Youth Outreach Center offers a wholesome, supportive and safe place, with many social and cultural activities, such as:

  • Hip-Hop Dance Group
  • Amharic Music Circle
  • Young Leadership
  • Jewish and Israeli Festivals
  • Soccer
  • English class

Parents are actively involved in the centers, and assistance is provided to them to help them understand and deal with the additional struggle of coping with adolescent youth.
