The Challenge

Overcoming English as a Second or Third Language

English language proficiency continues to be one of the greatest obstacles to the successful integration of Ethiopian-Israeli youth into Israeli society. English is a challenging subject for most Ethiopian-Israeli school children and a third language for the community’s Ethiopian-born. With high-level English being a requirement for university acceptance, English comprehension continues to prevent many Ethiopian-Israelis from attending university.

ENP's Response

English as a Key to Success in Israel

ENP’s “Bridges” program boosts English proficiency with the aim of creating a community of inspired young adults capable of using mutual linguistic understanding to forge connections between Diaspora Jewry, Ethiopian Jewry, and the State of  Israel. “Bridges” in turn promotes greater understanding between Ethiopian-Israelis and other Diaspora communities.

The “Bridges” program consists of four components:

1) Supplementary after-school English instruction that uses innovative methods to increase motivation and inspire students (2 weekly hours, year-long, plus holiday or summer marathons and field trips)

2) Diaspora-Israel Pairs that promote collaboration between Diaspora and  Ethiopian-Israeli youth through a carefully constructed curriculum

3) A national group project competition that promotes leadership, community building, and English language skills

4) Jewish Summer Camp and Home Hospitality Experiences for select Ethiopian-Israeli youth who demonstrate exceptional commitment, progress, and enthusiasm.

ENP provides rising ninth graders with the opportunity to participate in English immersion and exchange programs. Our programs provide participants with the resources necessary to develop their English language skills through intensive instruction and language immersion. We use English as a tool to empower and motivate children, helping them to unlock what we believe to be their unlimited potential. Program participants are encouraged to challenge themselves, as each student is required to complete a project in English while also having the opportunity to “adopt” a Diaspora pair.

Bridges is essential to both the academic success of many Ethiopian-Israeli teens and the strengthening of connections between Ethiopian-Israeli youth and the rest of the Jewish Diaspora. We look forward to continuing our amazing work with the Ethiopian-Israeli community and hope for your continued support in our effort to change the lives of hundreds.
