Meet Mazal, a fourteen year-old living in Ashkelon. Mazal’s parents met during Operation Moses, a large-scale covert operation to bring Ethiopian Jews out of Sudan and into Israel. Since her father passed, Mazal and her six siblings were raised by a single parent who works as a custodian to provide for her family.

Upon hearing about the opportunity to participate in SPACE, Mazal was hesitant to start, but eager to get assistance with her schooling. She explains, “when they offered this to me I didn’t object because I really wanted it. I really wanted the help.” She has friends in the program which helped her to get acclimated to the rigorous schedule. Her teachers have introduced math and English to help with her matriculation exams, but she is most grateful that she was able to improve her Hebrew language and grammar skills since her mother does not speak Hebrew.

Despite her short time in the program, Mazal has had a positive outlook due to the vast amount of knowledge she is acquiring at SPACE. She aspires to be an actress as she is a lover of theater.
