Shalev's Story-Yokneam

Youth in School
City: Yokneam

"SPACE teachers use interactive methods for the students that can improve self-confidence, not just grades."

Shalev is 14 years old, and was born in Israel. Her family made Aliya in 1998, but left some family behind who still live in Ethiopia. Both of Shalev’s parents work full time, so they often do not have time to help her with her homework. Fortunately, some of her older brothers are able to help, but Shalev’s studies have always been very important to her, so she wanted to seek out some extra help as well. When she heard about ENP’s SPACE program, Shalev recognized that it could be impactful for her in the academic sphere as well as the social sphere. Shalev says that she would like to be like Beyoncé one day, as she loves to sing, and the teachers in SPACE use interactive methods for the students that can improve self-confidence, not just grades. Shalev has made friends through this program and improved her grades in both math and English. Math has even become her favorite subject. Shalev’s role-model is her mother, who has overcome many obstacles in her life, and she hopes that one day she can visit Ethiopia.
