Yisrael's Story

Youth in School
City: Tel Aviv

"I joined SPACE because I want to learn, to advance, to succeed."

Yisrael’s family made Aliyah five years ago from a village in Ethiopia where he worked as a shepherd. Yisrael explains that it was strange for him being in Israel initially but he quickly adapted and learned a lot. Since his parents don’t speak Hebrew very well and his family only speaks Amharic at home, Yisrael cannot get adequate help with his studies. This year was the first year of ENP’s SPACE Program in Tel Aviv and Yisrael joined the program because he had a desire to improve his performance in school and succeed. His grades in English and math have risen from 50s to 80s. SPACE gives him the extra assistance he needs with studying, since he is still adjusting to the learning styles in Israel. His parents are very supportive of the SPACE program and can see Yisrael’s improvements. In his free time, Yisrael enjoys working out and playing with his friends. He dreams of being in the elite Israeli counter-terrorism unit in the Israeli Police Force after he serves in the army.
